  • Cholla Cactus

Teddy bear cholla (Opuntia bigelovii) is just one of a large family of Opuntias. It is also known as jumping cholla because the joints are so easily dettached that those who brush by it will have spines attached to clothing or skin, having the impression that the plant "jumped" to the attack. The spines have a barb that is very painful and difficult to dislodge.  It is an excellent protection for the cactus wrens and other small animals.
