Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) as its name indicate is a native of China, Korea and Japan.  It is a deciduous tree, growing up to 80 feet,  with small leaves and inconspicuous flowers.  Grows well in California, tough and adaptable.  It is resistant to  diseases attacking other elms.  Growing relatively fast, and easily cultivated, it is used  extensively for shade.
